Mme Leona LaCoste (née Cheys)

1935 — 2025

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Leona LaCoste (née Cheys), who passed away at the age of 89 on February 8, 2025.

Born on March 16, 1935, in St Boniface, Manitoba, she worked for 8 years as a legal secretary at a law firm before dedicating herself to raising a family. In 1972, she and her husband moved their family to Dorval, QC, where they have lived for 53 years. She was a devoted member of St. Veronica’s Parish, attended weekly services and volunteered for several years with their Care Apartment team.

Leona was proud of her Dutch heritage, a love she expressed through her fondness for tulips and vibrant flowers. Those who knew her will remember her for her bright blue eyes, contagious laugh and the warmth she brought into every room. She had a deep appreciation for music, especially the violin, finding comfort and joy in the melodies of André Rieu and her favorite song “Somewhere Over the Rainbow”. She was a gifted storyteller, who delighted in sharing memories from her past. She also had a passion for puzzles, and painting, always embracing creativity in her everyday life.

Leona will be deeply missed by her husband of 67 years, Emile LaCoste; her children, Guy (Hala), Mark (Cammie), Kim (Simon), and Glenn; her grandchildren, Nathalie (Dave), Nicole (Franklin), Matthew, Philip, Daniel, Troy, Kayla, and Sean; and her great-grandchildren, Taylor, Norah, Zachary, and “Bump” (a baby on the way). She is also lovingly remembered by her dear friends Gabie, the Rozario family, Melva & Nellie (“the girls” as she called them), the Plate family, the Adams family and countless other friends and loved ones who will continue to cherish her memory.

A funeral will be held on Saturday February 22, 2025 at St. Veronica’s Parish, beginning at 11 :00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Heart and Stroke foundation in Leona’s honor.

Though she may no longer be with us in body, her spirit and legacy will live on in the hearts of those who loved her. And just like the song she loved, may she now rest peacefully, beyond the rainbow, where dreams really do come true.

Rest in peace, Leona. You will be dearly missed.

I am so sorry to hear of Leona‘s passing. I have known Leona for years through various activities in Dorval, But I really got to know her in a course offered by the City of Dorval in which I was the moderator. that is why I can say that the photograph here of Leona does her amazing justice. It captures her warmth, her joy, and especially her spunky attitude (some might call it cheekiness)! I got to know her further as a member of the Dorval Artists Association. Seeing her always brought a smile to my face. She will be greatly missed.

Dear LaCoste family, it is with both sadness and fond memories that I send you all this message. Emile(« Mr. LaCoste »), Guy, Mark, Kim and Glenn. May you keep your memories close, as you deal with your loss of a beloved wife/mother. I will remember fondly Leona(« Mrs. LaCoste ») as she interacted with all friends and neighbors on Third Avenue and made it a better place since the day she arrived. A shining example of what family life is, and should be all about! Very happy I was able to observe all this from across the street! I will keep these memories close. May Leona(« Mrs. LaCoste ») rest in peace! My deepest sympathies to the whole family!
