M. Arthur Thomas Ridgway

M. Arthur Thomas Ridgway

Arthur Thomas Ridgway, a beloved husband, father and grandfather died peacefully, in his sleep, at his home in Dorval on Sunday, January 14, 2024. He was 94.
He lived a long, full life and was surrounded by his loved ones and family until the end.

He was born in Liverpool, England, on February 28, 1929 to Annie Agar and Thomas Ridgway. He spent part of his childhood in the Welsh countryside while Nazi bombs fell. As a young man, Arthur enlisted into the British Army and was part of the expeditionary force (BCOF) that occupied Japan after the war. There, he worked on the staff of a newspaper that was distributed to Commonwealth soldiers. Shortly after returning to Liverpool, Arthur met his wife of 70 years, Sylvia Dann. Together they immigrated to Montreal, Canada. Arthur found work in the telecommunications industry, where he spent his career working on, among other things, the development of satellite communications technology.

Arthur and Sylvia moved into a home in Dorval in 1958, where he lived for the rest of his life. Arthur was deeply involved in his community as a volunteer, and a member of various clubs.
In his retirement, Arthur was an avid reader, curler, gardener and a lover of animals, especially cats. Though he sometimes displayed a hard exterior, he was caring, quick with a joke until the end, possessed a beautiful baritone singing voice, and shed tears when he walked his granddaughter down the aisle at her wedding in 2022. He was a skilled storyteller who held his grandchildren’s attention with tales of his time in the British Army or the adventures he and Sylvia had when they first came to Canada.

He is survived by his wife, Sylvia, his brother George (Jenny), three children, Susan (Duane), Claire (James) and Noelle (Phu), and his four grandchildren, Julie (Ed), Alexa (Scott) Matthew (Aislinn) and Carter (Megan). He will be sorely missed.

Visitation will take place at JJ Cardinal Funeral Home, 560 Bord Du Lac, Dorval, Friday January 19th 3-5 p.m.
