Dr. Michael Westwood

(1942-2025)
Dr. Michael Westwood passed away on February 4, just shy of his 83rd birthday after fighting a long and brave battle with Progressive Super Nuclear Palsy, a rare and sadly incurable brain disorder. Michael will be lovingly remembered by his cherished wife Meg, sons Nicholas, (Julie), Simon (Emily), and Marc and five grandchildren Audra, Henri, Maive, Evan, and Logan. He will be missed by us all, including his extended family in the UK, Wales, and South Africa, along with colleagues and many friends.

After entering medical school at the University of Cape Town in South Africa at the age of 17, Michael started practicing medicine in his early twenties. He met is wife, Margaret (Meg) as a young doctor and shortly after marriage on March 7, 1970, the two of them set out to start their lives together in the UK, eventually immigrating to Canada.

While in the UK, Michael practiced general medicine and welcomed his first son, Nicholas, into the family. He also completed a diploma in Child Health at King’s College in London. After immigrating to Canada, Michael and his wife settled in Ottawa where Michael was one of the founding members of the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario (CHEO). He welcomed his second son Simon during his time in Ottawa. Shortly after Simon’s arrival, Michael moved his family to Toronto where he entered the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada to gain his Specialist Certificate in Paediatrics. Upon graduation, he and Meg moved their family to New York City to finish his education in Adolescent Medicine, specializing in eating disorders. Michael and Meg finally settled in Montreal, where he spent almost 50 years practicing medicine. They welcomed their third son, Marc, while living in Montreal.

Michael dedicated his life to helping children and families across Montreal. He worked at the Montreal Children’s Hospital, Lakeshore General hospital and practiced private medicine on the West Island until his eventual retirement at the age of 75 years old. He worked with at-risk youth at a local drug addiction rehabilitation centre for adolescents through Portage’s Programs for Youth. Michael also taught medical students as an associate professor at McGill University for over 25 years and served as Chairman of the Adolescent Health Committee in 1983, served as a member of the Adolescent Health Committee and the Healthy Active Living Committee. In 1998, he was featured in an article in the Paediatrics & Child Health Journal.

Michael was actively involved in his church, often volunteering his time, alongside his wife, to support local charities. He was a consummate Gentlemen who always prioritized time with his family, was an avid reader, had a love of the arts, a classically trained pianist and organist as well as a steady golfer.

A celebration of life will be held in Montreal on Saturday, April 5 at the Anglican Church of All Saints by the Lake (865, ch. du Bord-du-Lac-Lakeshore, Dorval) at 10:30 am, with a reception to follow, starting at 12 pm at Lakeshore Cardinal Funeral Home (560 ch. du Bord-du-Lac-Lakeshore, Dorval, QC H9S 2B3). There will also be a Wake on Friday April 4 from 4 to 7 pm for those unable to attend the funeral. You are also welcome to attend both.

In lieu of flowers, we invite families to donate to the Montreal Children’s Hospital in Michael’s name.
