Mrs. Bamatter (Nee Akzam), Mary Georgette

1923 – 2022

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our loving mother in her 99th year, in Beaconsfield, Quebec. She passed peacefully and is now reunited in heaven with her loving husband Gustav who passed away last September 2021.

Mary was a hands-on, loving and dedicated mother to Peter (Brenda), Paul (Cindy) and Patricia. She was a loving grandmother of 12: David (Franca), Justin, Valerie, Andrew, Dana-Lyn, Wendy (Andrew), Julie, Heidi (Mark), Christopher (Veronica), Nick (Ali), Randall, and Nathan (Morgan). Proud great-grandmother to Luca, Dominik, Calista, Michael, Kora, Jonathan, and Saya.

Mary was known for so many wonderful qualities, one of them being her loud and infectious laugh; you could not help but to laugh along, even if you didn’t quite know why. Her huge personality and love of family is what got er through good and difficult times – as well as her love of dancing, which she often did in her kitchen, while singing and preparing a special meal for her family.

A native Canadian, with deep roots to Syria, she was an avid middle eastern chef. No matter what you were going through in life – her medicine was lots of food and no one ever left hungry. She was very welcoming to all and opened her fridge the minute you walked in to prepare a special dish. Her food also went along with her passion to give advice, on anything she felt she could, and made sure she followed up on it, because she cared. Her gardening skills and love of growing flowers, plants, and growing vegetables, were one of her passions. Her all-time favorite songs were O Canada and Que Sera Sera, which she sang with vigor.

She will be deeply missed and forever in our hearts.

A very special thank you to Jeanette Baker who was an angel sent to our family and cared deeply for Mary with laughter, attention, patience, and love, we remain deeply grateful. Also special thanks to the wonderful staff of Sunrise Beaconsfield Retirement Residence, which Mary called home for the last four years, where she received kind and loving care throughout her stay.

A celebration of Mary’s life will be held at J.J. Cardinal Funeral Home, 560 Lakeshore Dr., Dorval (Quebec) H9S2B3 on Saturday, February 11th at 11:00AM, with a short visitation period beforehand from 10:00 to 11:00AM.
