Visual Artist
Martha Ann Markowsky has passed away, leaving behind a profound legacy of creativity. Predeceased by her loving parents, John Markowski and Adele Chaikowsky of Lachine, Martha’s memory will be cherished by her family and the countless lives she touched through her life and art. She is survived by her brothers, Walter (Linda) and Robert (Theresa). She is also fondly remembered by her niece Lauren (Jovana), nephews Michael and Alex, and great-niece Ines. In addition to her family, Martha leaves behind her very dear friend, Elaine Archambault, as well as an extensive circle of friends and colleagues in Ottawa, Kingston, and Montreal. Martha extended her deepest gratitude to Bob and Theresa who provided care throughout her illness as well as Heather, Mariette, Franca, Francine, and the compassionate nursing staff at the Lachine Hospital, who provided comfort and support during her final weeks. Martha’s lifelong love and absolute passion was art. True to her calling and forever possessing an artist’s eye, Martha spent her final weeks sketching the scenes around her in the hospital. Martha hoped that there would be plenty of canvases waiting for her in heaven so she could continue creating fine art.
As a nationally recognized visual artist, Martha was represented by prestigious galleries across Canada. An elected member of the Society of Canadian Artists, her talent earned her numerous accolades, including the prestigious “Le Fil de l’Excellence” awarded by the City of Lachine in recognition of her outstanding artistic accomplishments. Martha remains best recognized for her evocative paintings of sweeping symphony orchestras, nostalgic backyard scenes of children playing hockey, intimate interior bar scenes, and the vibrant, textured landscapes of the Charlevoix and Ottawa regions. Her artworks are held in esteemed collections worldwide, notably including the private collections of two former Canadian Prime Ministers, prominent corporations, and eminent figures globally. Beyond her own canvas, Martha was a dedicated educator who shared her brilliance through classes and workshops across Canada and Europe. A gifted lecturer for university and art groups, her boundless energy and infectious teaching style inspired countless students to find their own creative voices. Martha truly lived and worked by the tenet: “Art is life. Life is art. Art is my passion.” She will be deeply missed. Her vision will live on eternally through her art.
