Mr. Gregory Bielby

1955 – 2023

It is with profound sadness that we announce the sudden loss of Greg Bielby. He passed away peacefully on January 16, 2023 in Montreal, Quebec, surrounded by those who loved him.

Cherished and devoted husband of Karen Walker, loving father to Christopher (Mara Frost) and Steven (Erica Lee), and proud grandfather to Owen. Dear brother to Trevor (Julie), Dennis (Christine), Noel (Carmel), and sister-in-law Jill Walker (Roger Bouthillier). Caring uncle to Dennis, Diane, Paul, Trisha, Nick, Andrew, Tom, Chantal, and Melanie.

Born in Adelaide, Australia, Greg completed his studies at the University of Adelaide, acquiring a PhD in electrical engineering. He moved to Montreal in 1983 and started his career at Bell Northern Research and then Nortel, working at the forefront of speech recognition technology.

A proud Aussie, Greg made sure to impart as much Australian culture into the lives of his family as possible.  He was so proud of his home country and of all of his wonderful family still living there.

Greg was a prominent member of the Pointe-Claire community, volunteering at the Pointe-Claire Aquatic Centre and ALPs for over 25 years. He acted as treasurer for the Pointe-Claire Aquatic Centre Board of Directors. Many will remember him fondly for his friendly personality, kindness, and selflessness.

The family is grateful to the MUHC’s Royal Victoria Hospital Intensive Care team for their care and compassion.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Greg’s name to the MUHC Foundation (comment: ECMO program) at muhcfoundation.com, or the Australian Wildlife Conservancy’s “Support effective Bilby conservation” campaign at www.australianwildlife.org.

A celebration of Greg’s life will take place on Thursday, January 26 2023, from 1 – 4 pm, and 6 – 9 pm, at J.J. Cardinal Funeral Home, 560 Lakeshore Road, Dorval (www.jjcardinal.ca, 514-631-1511). The funeral service will be held on Saturday, January 28 at 4:30 pm.

We are sending our most sincere condolences to Karen and family. We have such fond memories working with Greg on committees and at swim meets. He was a great mentor and advocate and was always willing to take the time to help and always with a smile . Point Claire swim meets won’t be the same without him .

      Hi Robert,

Such kind words and comforting word.I went to Greg’s “Celebration of Life” to express my condolences. Speaking to the family and seeing all the photos and memorabilia made me realize that I didn’t know much about Greg’s personal life. Despite his sudden passing, he had a fulfilling life with a wonderful family and many friends.

      Hope all is well.

      Best Regards,

      David
