Mr. Gustav Bamatter

1932 – 2021

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our brave and courageous father in his 89th year, in Beaconsfield, Quebec.  He passed away on September 28th surrounded by his loving and devoted family.

Gus is survived by his adoring and spirited wife Mary Georgette Akzam with whom he has been married to for 67 years. Dedicated father to Peter (Brenda), Paul (Cindy) and Patricia.  He was a loving grandfather of 12: David (Franca), Justin, Valerie, Andrew, Dana-Lyn, Wendy (Andrew), Julie, Heidi (Mark), Christopher (Veronica), Nick (Alyssa), Randall and Nathan (Morgan).  Proud great-grandfather to Luca, Dominik, Calista, Michael, Kora, Jonathan and little Saya.

Gus was an avid chef and liked to experiment with new recipes on his family…some were very questionable but always made with love.  He was a passionate fisherman who loved the water, his fishing stories were epic and always filled with adventure and slight exaggeration and the big one always got away!

Gus enjoyed a diverse and successful career from starting out as a horse butcher to being a Mechanical Engineer at Molson Brewery, to being General Manager at one of the greatest Canadian hotels, Le Chateau Frontenac in Quebec City, where he was truly in his element and the happiest in life. While there, he made many friends including Ronald Reagan, Brian Mulroney, Rene Levesque and met many high-ranking dignitaries where he interacted with class and grace, and respect by all.

A native of Switzerland, he was the kindest man, with strong values, always encouraging and never judging, rather the opposite.  He was welcoming of all and always had a cold beer and a good joke ready for anyone who came to visit.

He will be deeply missed and forever in our hearts.

A very special thank you to Jeanette Baker who was an angel sent to our family and cared deeply for Gus with laughter, attention, patience and love, we remain deeply grateful.  Also special thanks to the wonderful staff of Sunrise Beaconsfield Retirement Home which Gus called home for the last three years and where he received kind and compassionate care throughout his stay and especially in his final days in their hospice care.

A celebration of Gus’s life will be held at JJ Cardinal Funeral Home, 560 Lakeshore Dr., Dorval, (514 631-1511)  (Quebec) H9S 2B3 on October 10th. Visitation will be at 11:00, followed by a celebration of life at 12:00.
